Public Awareness Events

  • Lionfish Challenge

    • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

    • The Lionfish Challenge is a free summer-long (June 1-October 1, 2023) lionfish tournament open to recreational and commercial competitors of all ages around the state of Florida. Our goal remains the same -- remove as many lionfish as we can in just four months. Are you up for the Challenge?

  • The Great Chesapeake Invasives Count

    • Coastal Conservation Association Maryland.

    • Report your catch of invasive fish species (northern snakehead, blue catfish, flathead catfish) in the Chesapeake Watershed for a chance to win great prizes! The Great Chesapeake Invasives Count is an annual angling-based effort (April 1-October 31, 2023)  to provide important data to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, USFWS, and other management agencies on what you're seeing on the water. Information related to the number of fish you catch during a given time, as well as the length and weight of the fish you catch is important to fishery managers. It is also vital to investigate the feeding habits of invasive fish to help understand the short and long-term impacts that their existence may cause on native species. It is important that the public recognizes the impacts that these species can have on our natural ecosystems, and does not continue the spread of these fish.

Monthly drawings for prizes are based on your catches reported. Every invasive you catch-photo-enter (via the iAngler app) earns you a chance of winning.

    • Notes

Theme - "Strengthening Restoration Through Collaboration"

NCER features four days of presentations dedicated to both small and large scale ecosystem restoration. The conference opens Monday with a full day of talks focused on the desert southwest where communities and ecosystems are on the front lines of climate change and drought. During the summer of 2022, the Rio Grande dried in Albuquerque for the first time in 40 years, while New Mexico’s largest wildfire in recorded history raged in the Santa Fe National Forest. In the neighboring Colorado River Basin, drought and climate change have sparked emergency water management negotiations while the largest reservoir in the United States is at its lowest level since 1937. In the face of these challenges, innovative partnerships have emerged to address dire threats, conserve, and restore ecosystems, and more effectively allocate water for fish, wildlife, and people. Where better for the ecosystem restoration community to gather, learn from each other, and advance and strengthen restoration through collaboration than in the face of unprecedented change?

Concurrent sessions on Tuesday through Thursday feature technical talks on large-scale and small-scale restoration in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems from across the country.

ICAIS provides an international platform for the presentation of research to advance global action to limit the introduction and spread of AIS worldwide and serves as a catalyst for international collaboration on research and management projects. Through knowledge sharing and networking, ICAIS connects those involved in science and policy with practitioners and industry professionals on the front lines of AIS prevention and management.
